Beverly McCarter is a fourth- and fifth-grade teacher at Joseph Weller Elementary School, has been named Leo B. Murphy Teacher of the Year for the 2010 Milpitas Unified School District. McCarter, 57, has been teaching for many years. Her name now appears on the new Milpitas Rotary Club plaque, located near the front lobby of the library at 160 N. Main St. The plaque also honors past Milpitas' public school teacher recipients since 2001. The plaque holds 40 small bronze placards so teachers over the next 30 years can be honored.

Leo B. Murphy came over to Milpitas in 1956 to teach at the then-new Samuel Ayer High School, the first new high school that was opening in the emerging city. He later became the school’s principal. He also helped to launch the YMCA in Milpitas, the former Milpitas Youth Center now known as the Sal Cracolice Building. Murphy was also a Rotarian, and served as the club president from 1960-1961.
