The largest annual fundraiser in Milpitas, the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life, steps off at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Now in its 13th year, the Milpitas Relay this year will go for 24 hours, instead of the 16 it has run in previous years. The event has raised over $1 million since its inception, money used for research and to help improve the lives of people living with cancer.

In a recent newspaper interview, this year's event chair, Carla Kearin, said being part of Relay helps those dealing with the deadly disease in themselves or a loved one feel stronger.

"I think that a lot of people lose loved ones to cancer and they feel they are stuck between a rock and a hard place," Kearin said. "In reality there is nothing you can do about your loved one but there is something you can do ... there is so much that you can do. And once you get involved you get this strange feeling of empowerment, 'Now I'm doing something about it.'"

The strained economy may have an impact on participation this time around, but last year 53 teams helped to raise nearly $120,000.
