Milpitas High School freshman Arthur Tran impressed judges on Monday with his knowledge of the Rotary Club and his awareness of the world around him, taking home first place at the club’s speech contest.

In addition to winning $100, Tran will move on to compete on March 1 with other high school-age speech winners from Rotary Clubs in the north Silicon Valley area. Tran spoke about the future of Rotary and how the group helps the world.

“The judges picked him for his knowledge, his mannerisms and his presentation,” said Wanda Olinger, chairperson of Rotary’s Interact Club.

Senior Jonathan Yip took home second place, earning $50. Freshman Susan Wong finished third and received $25.

All of the speeches had to include one of the tenets of Rotary's famous “four-way test”: Is it the truth? Is it beneficial to all? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendship? The speakers were given five minutes, and were penalized if they went under four minutes or over five.

This was great! I attended this speech contest, everyone was great, but unfortunately only one had to win.
